All tanneries represented by Pelle Leathers have invested a tremendous amount of man-hours, along with substantial funds in innovative technology and processes to manufacture leather without impacting on health and the environment. Leather is nature's product and must be made in harmony with nature. The tanneries are committed to keeping the environment clean and all waters contamination free. They are committed to adopting the latest and most progressive leather production technologies as they are researched and developed.This allows us to provide our customers with superior quality leathers now and continuing in the future.
In minimising environmental impact it starts with the raw hide:
- Only the finest quality raw material (ie fresh produce) is sourced thus minimising the amount of processing and chemicals required.
- Extended soaking and liming processes allow for a considerable reduction in chemicals. Deliming is achieved with nitrogen-free substances.This protects the streams and lakes from nitrogen emissions and over fertilization.
- All wastewater is cleaned in a biological treatment plant, recycled and reused. No PCP, CADMIUM or AZO – Col Dyes are used in the tanning process. All dyes and pigments (finishes) are solvent free ie water based
- State of the art application technology optimizes the finishing process and greatly reduces the rate of airborne emissions.
- Regular inspections are conducted to ensure that quality and environmental standards are maintained at all times.
- Pelle leathers maintains a high environmental standard in its daily operations by recycling and minimising wastes and a strong commitment in the reduction of landfill.
